Physical Therapists Integral in Chronic Pain Treatment

There’s acute pain, from injuries and after surgery. And there’s chronic pain, which can linger months—even years. Physical therapists have long been recognized for their roles in preventing and treating acute pain. Today, there’s increased emphasis on physical therapists’ roles in helping patients with chronic pain.

Physical therapists are trained to administer treatments that help patients with long-term pain, including strengthening and flexibility exercises, manual therapy, posture awareness and body mechanics instruction. Physical therapists also help patients better understand the underlying causes of their pain.

Left untreated, chronic pain can take a big toll on sufferers’ mental and physical health. Patients often feel isolated, and many become depressed or think they’ll have to live with the pain.

“We use a variety of evidence-guided treatments to deal with chronic pain,” says John Garzione, PT, DPT, president of the Pain Management Special Interest Group of American Physical Therapy Association’s Orthopaedic Section. “When we go low and slow, physical therapists are able to gradually increase the intensity of active exercises. We also educate the patient about how brain and central nervous system hypersensitivity contribute to their chronic pain. We encourage our patients to never give up, that this does not have to be a way of life.”
