Patients who are about to undergo surgical procedures, such as a total joint replacement, might neglect to tell their surgeons if they take herbal supplements. Many people think that because these supplements are considered natural or homeopathic they don’t need to mention taking them. But a new review of the literature suggests this is a dangerous misconception. In fact, many herbal remedies, including feverfew, St. John’s Wort, glucosamine and black cohosh, could have serious and potentially harmful side effects when combined with medications prescribed during and after surgery, according to a review article in the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. A new study suggests that patients who have total knee replacements on both knees in one procedure had fewer prosthetic joint infections, as well as other knee revision operations, within one year after surgery compared to patients who had both their knees done as separate procedures.
